West Ham United pair Matt Fry and Jordan Brown line up for Gillingham's reserve team at Priestfield against Millwall

Matt Fry

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler could turn to a former player as he searches for an answer to his defensive problems.

West Ham centre-back Matt Fry lined up for Gillingham’s reserve side on Tuesday afternoon in a 1-0 defeat to a Millwall XI.

Fry (pictured) enjoyed a successful loan stint for the Gills during the 2009/10 season under previous manager Mark Stimson.

Last season he played 25 games for Charlton Athletic in League 1 during another loan spell.

Gillingham have maintained close links with former assistant manager Ian Hendon, who is now development manager with West Ham.

Fry, 21, has yet to feature for West Ham’s first team and could be brought to Priestfield in time for their trip to Accrington on Saturday.

Hessenthaler is keen to strengthen his back-line following a 4-3 defeat to Wimbledon at the weekend.

The Gills also fielded fellow West Ham defender Jordan Brown in the game against Millwall at Priestfield. He spent the first half of this season on loan at Aldershot.

Another trialists in the match was former TNS winger Ryan Marriott.

The only goal of the game was scored by Danny N’Guessan with a second half header.

*The Gills also sent a young team to West Ham’s Upton Park on Tuesday where they drew 1-1.

Matt Fry would be a great signing - he and either King, Richards or Frampton would help our cause. I really think that Lawrence needs to be dropped. Yes he is great at headering the ball, but when it comes to pace, he has no chance and often concedes fouls. I think we could also do with Fuller back at right back. Charlie Lee is a good cover for now and he is great at getting forward on the wing, but I think he would be best suited playing on right wing permanantly.

I also think that Darren Dennehy would be another good signing - he did very well for us whilst on loan under Stimson and it was unfortunate that he chose to follow Stimson to Barnet from Cardiff City.

As soon as we can sought out our defensive frailties, I see no reason why we cannot go on a decent run, the strikeforce is immense and Tomlin looks like a great signing (watching back his assist for Kuffour, it was pure class!)

The midfield still isn't quite there, but I think the best combination is Jackman, J.Payne, Weston (or Montrose, Whelpdale, Spiller) and Lee (or Whelpdale, Spiller).

    Up the Gills!

For an article completely un-related to Dennis Oli, there's an awful lot of Dennis Oli talk on here!

Matt Fry was fantasic on his last loan spell here, he is faster, predominantly left footed so able to play at left back if push comes to shove, and would add some much needed youth to our set up.

I think he played a few games on loan at Charlton and did quite well, so he has had a little more experience at a higher level since his loan spell here.

Don't think he would command much of a fee (if at all) either so would love to have him back!

Matt Fry would be another very good signing if this comes off. Can we get him on loan until the end of the season? I hope so.

As the Dennis Oli question ....in my opinion he did well in the promotion season under Mark Stimson. His effort can never be faulted. I agree that he shouldn't be offered a new deal in the summer, but please let's not abuse the guy. He's been a loyal, 100% dedicated player. No longer good enough, but totally up for a scrap.

Hessy signed a few of Stimmo`s players on two year contracts and Oli was one of them. I think he took advice from Mark Robson on who to offer contracts to but of course must have also had a look at the players himself. Dennis had done quite well when Hessy offered the contract and as we all know though he will never set the world alight he can offer some good perfomances as he showed in the playoff final against Shrewsbury and in the FA cup tie against Aston Villa. Perhaps he is a big game player?

i stand corrected then. i can only assume that it must have been the fact that we were very short on numbers when he was offered that contract. oli did well while dimson was here though. credit where it's due. hess had to make a decision based on how he had performed up to that point, and up to that point he had done well for us when available.

been thinking about matt fry and i think he is exactly what we need. he's young, quick, has a good attitude, local lad (gravesend), wants to sign for us, probably wouldnt command a huge wage (hopefully anyway).....have i missed anything out?

if we chose to sign him permanently when his west ham contract expires at the end of this season, would he cost us a fee because of his young age?

he has been tweeting saying that he would like to come back here so i am really getting my hopes up now

Oli have never and will never set out to damage the club. But he would want a fair deal if the club were ever to think of paying him off. My guess is the club would find that he would want his full wage bill paid. That would mean any pay off would be frankly quite daft. The same may well be the case for a few others in the squad.
On the subject of Matt Fry he is a class player at our level and would bring much needed pace to our defence.

Matt Fry would indeed be a great signing but signings cost money and this must be balanced by moving some on or out. The chairman can't be faulted for his efforts to bring success but he will want to see returns for his dosh as is only right. We can't afford such a large squad particularly when some aren't producing what they were brought in for and others are just not going to make it.So Hess its now time to get strong and get rid of the dead wood then we can push on and make promotion or at least the play-offs. How about the manager doing something about the deadwood at the club such as Oli, this would then make it a touch easier to sign Matty Fry who i would love to come back.
I have seen no evidence yet that Hess is trying to balance the books .

apparently both he and the other lad who featured, jordan browne, have both been told that they need to find new clubs as there contracts will not be rnewed when they run out at the end of the season.

fry has tweeted that he would like to play for us again so it just comes down to whether hess wants him and if we can afford his wages which i would imagine wouldnt be too much.

he played a lot of games for charlton pathetic whilst on loan there last season so he must be up to the job. we could do with a young talented centre back
