Gillingham striker Stefan Payne leaves the club to join League 2 rivals Aldershot Town

Gillingham striker Stefan PayneGillingham striker Stefan Payne has joined Aldershot after his Priestfield contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Payne, who joined the Gills in the summer of 2010 after being released by Fulham, was out of contract at the end of the season.

He never got a run in the first team at Priestfield despite a number of substitute appearances - and found himself even further down the pecking order after the arrivals of Jo Kuffour and Gavin Tomlin during the January transfer window.

Payne has signed for Aldershot until the end of the current season.

How do you think Stefan Payne will fare at Aldershot? Have your say in our comments section below.

I like Stefan Payne, but he's just never been quite good enough compared to the other strikers we've had - and by that I mean Cody McDonald, Jo Kuffour, Danny Kedwell, Bayo Akinfenwa and Gavin Tomlin - in that order.

I wish Stefan all the best. He's scored a few really nice goals for us. He's got a nice touch about him at times, and if he gets games under his belt he could still yet turn into a good player.

I was born in Aldershot, so I wish him and the Shots all the best. However, I always hope they finish well below the Gills of course!

Come on boys, 3 points tomorrow, please! UTG.

I think its a shame that Stefan has left, at the beginning of the season when we were playing 4-5-1 would have been the ideal time to give him a run in the team. Anyways I wish him the best at Aldershot and that for us to get three points tomorrow at Accrington.

    Up The Gills!
