Gillingham manager Martin Allen praises his League 2 leaders for fighting back against Plymouth Argyle

by Luke Cawdell
Gillingham boss Martin Allen admitted his team
weren’t at their best at Plymouth on Saturday and was
pleased to have emerged with a point.
“You have to give our players a huge amount of
credit for the comeback,” said Allen, pictured, whose side
twice fought back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw.
“They just don’t know when they are beaten,
they just keep going. With their fitness levels they are
relentless.
“It’s another great point for our team on
their travels and after the week they’ve had it was always going to
be a bit of a concern. Plymouth lost to a non-league team and
played very well against Burton (on Wednesday night) and lost and
we were the third team in line and I was thinking ‘this is not a
good time to go there’.
“They certainly played with a lot of passion
and a lot of enthusiasm and they gave us a right good game, there
is no doubt about that. But our Gillingham players just keep
going.
“In the end the players got the break they
needed and then we nearly won it, as we had one cleared off the
line.
“It would have been amazing if we had actually
won it. That was testament to the character and the personalities
we have got that they just keep going.
“It isn’t always going to be great play from
our boys, everybody knows that, but the lads who have come in have
done fantastic.”
