Gillingham striker Ben Strevens staking his claim for regular place in Martin Allen's starting line-up

Ben Strevens is hoping he has done enough to see more action this season after hitting Gillingham’s first goal on Saturday.

The striker, pictured, made his first league start playing in attack since moving to Priestfield alongside Deon Burton at Plymouth and repaid the faith shown in him by manager Martin Allen by netting his first league goal of the campaign.

He said: "I want to play upfront. I got a start on Saturday and got a goal and I give the gaffer another option.

"He likes to change the team and if I come in and score then I might start the next one but we will have to see. We have such a strong squad you can’t expect to play every week."

Strevens has tasted promotion three times previously and believes the way Gills fought back to hit a second equaliser late in the match was a good sign.

"It was a tough game and we’ll take the point," he said. "It is a good sign that we have played games where we aren’t necessarily at our best and to come away with either winning or getting a point it is certainly a sign that this is a strong side."
