Gillingham captain Adam Barrett extends his contract at Priestfield
Gillingham captain Adam Barrett has signed a
two year extension with the club.
The new deal will keep 32-year-old Barrett at
the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.
Barrett
(pictured) joined the Gills in the summer, initially on a one
year deal, with an option of a second.
But such has been Barrett’s impact this season
the Gills have tied him down now to a longer term contract.
Gills chairman Paul Scally was back in the
country to oversee negotiations personally.
And he said: “In the short time that Adam’s
been with us he’s proven himself to be a leader both on and off the
pitch.
“He’s been a character around the club and
there is no doubt that everyone has benefited from him being in
that back four as well.
“I think a player like Adam is a shining
example to all the youngsters that are coming through. He is a true
professional and along with the other experienced players that we
have at the club, he shows the youngsters how the game should be
played.”
Barrett has become an ever-present under
manager Martin Allen and is becoming a hit with the fans. At the
weekend his headed goal earned the Gills a valuable point at
Plymouth, while in defence he has helped forge the tightest defence
in League 2.
