Kent athletes enjoyed a successful weekend at the UK Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

Despite the withdrawal through injury of Maidstone-born TeamGB Olympian Jack Green, there were still several representatives from the county in action, seeking to claim qualifying marks for next month’s European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dartford shot-putter Scott Rider claimed his third successive title with a  personal best throw of 18.59m to equal the best in the UK this season.

He finished 9cm clear of training partner Zane Ququemin for the second year in succession at the English Institute of Sport.

Gillingham’s Shaunagh Brown (pictured) was second in the women’s event, registering a throw of 16.07m, 12cm short of winner Rachel Wallader.

Sprinter Andre Wright, of Medway & Maidstone AC, was second in the 200m in 21.29sec, 0.33 behind winner Chris Clarke.

The 21-year-old was also fifth in the 60m final, crossing the line in 6.77, with winner James Dasaolu stopping the clock in 6.58.

Sittingbourne teenager Sean Molloy of Tonbridge AC was an excellent fifth in the senior 800m in 1.53.37.

Blackheath & Bromley AC sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, 17, reached the final of the 200m with a new indoor pb of 23.91 but did not start the final. She also ran a pb 7.35 on her way to the final of the 60m where she finished fifth.

Debbie Martin, of Ashford AC, failed to set a mark in the women’s high jump.
