Manager Martin Allen proud to create club history as Gillingham set new record for number of away wins in a season

by Luke Cawdell
Manager Martin Allen left Chesterfield with another three points
and a place in Gillingham’s record books.
It was a special night for the Gills boss after his team broke
the club record for the most away wins in a Football League
season.
The 11th win broke the record set in the 1984-85 season under
Keith Peacock.
Allen, pictured with matchwinner Cody McDonald, said: “The club
(as Gillingham FC) is 100 years old and we have broken the record
of 100 years of away wins – it’s fantastic, isn’t it.
“It’s a surreal feeling and I don’t think I have ever created
history before – not for the right reasons. To get this record
makes me proud.”
Gillingham’s success on their travels has been built on a solid
defence, which this season has so far conceded just nine goals on
their travels – better than any other league club in England.
Allen said: “It was testament to the players’ hard work. They
train hard, they listen and are receptive and are a pleasure to
work with.
“It is an all-round collective effort, on and off the field from
all the staff and the players and, of course, all the
supporters."
