John Schofield insists Gillingham must stay level-headed

The battle for top spot isn’t something assistant manager John Schofield is getting carried away with.

Gillingham and Port Vale have pulled away from the rest of League 2 and in recent weeks have traded places at the head of the table.

But Schofield isn’t letting that battle distract him.

He said: “There is still a long way to go. Football has a great habit of kicking you in the teeth when you think you have cracked something. We have been pretty level headed, regardless of if we have won, drawn or lost but we have a plan and a process and we are staying focused.”

Port Vale’s home win over Accrington on Saturday saw them move a point clear again but the Gills know they can regain top spot against Wycombe tonight.

Schofield added: “We look at the table but we will keep our heads down and keep ploughing on.”
