England Women are through to the Women’s World Cup Super
Sixes phase after recording a six-wicket win over West Indies in
Mumbai on Tuesday.
The victory represented a strong recovery from last Friday’s
shock opening loss to Sri Lanka, a process that began by beating
hosts India on Sunday.
England took full advantage of favourable bowling conditions,
and Merissa Aguilleira’s surprising decision to bat first, to
dismiss dismiss West Indies for 101.
However, a concern for England was captain Charlotte Edwards
(pictured) having to go off towards the end of the innings because
the Kent player was feeling unwell. That meant Edwards was not
allowed to open the batting when England replied.
But Arran Brindle, promoted up the order to take Edwards’ place,
put on 66 for the first wicket with Danni Wyatt and England, who
also included Kent’s Lydia Greenway in their line-up, went on to
reach their target with 15 overs to spare.
Edwards had been the star of the show against India two days
earlier, scoring 109 to become the leading run-scorer in women’s
one-day internationals as England recorded a 32-run victory.
