Gillingham boss Martin Allen knows the performance against York City in League 2 wasn’t good enough

by Luke Cawdell
Martin Allen was glad Gillingham salvaged a
point from Saturday’s match against York but admitted overall
it wasn’t good enough.
The Gills have now taken just two points
from a possible 15 in their last five outings at Priestfield.
It’s a run of form that isn’t lost on Gills
boss Allen.
He said: “When we all set out and left our
homes we all wanted three points to go top of the league. I didn’t
think we played that well.
“We played okay for the first 15 minutes
and then going in at half-time it wasn’t easy for our players, we
had made a couple of errors and we are finding it just a little bit
difficult here (at Priestfield) at the moment, but we’ve had
a good chat amongst ourselves.
“It wasn’t a great first half but we played
much, much better in the second half. From being 1-0 down it was
good to get a point.”
And scoring the all-important equaliser was
new signing Cody McDonald.
“It was a great moment, to score in front
of the Rainham End as well,” said Allen.
“He has looked sharp in training. It was a
great goal, he is a great lad and the agreement (between Gillingham
and parent club Coventry) didn’t actually go through until Saturday
morning. It was great to see him get out there and score.”
After conceding it wasn’t a great first
half, Allen was delighted the fans helped get the team right back
at it in the second half.
“They sung their hearts out for the whole
of the second half,” said the Gills boss.
“They really got behind the players. For
Cody to come on and do that was great for the supporters and the
supporters will be happy that he has scored, at the Rainham End, we
have got a point.
“But then all of us, myself included,
players as well, will all be saying we wanted three points and we
didn’t do this and didn’t do that and that’s only right.
"Well done for Cody and well done for the
second-half performance but I think everyone knows we need more and
we can do better and we will do better. I am already looking
forward to Tuesday night (against Northampton).”
