Gillingham manager Martin Allen happy with point from 1-1 draw at Aldershot in League 2

by Luke Cawdell
Martin Allen was delighted to lead his
side another step closer to promotion.
Saturday’s point at Aldershot
extended the Gills’ lead at the top of League 2 to three points and
the gap between themselves and fourth place to eight.
With 11 games left it’s a position
that the Gillingham manager, pictured, is more than happy
with.
He said: "We started the game
unbelievably well and had three chances in the first four minutes.
It was a fantastic reaction from the players from not winning the
other night (against Oxford).
"We didn’t play too bad but at this
time of year it’s about results and didn’t they come back
well?"
The Gills were a goal behind early in
the second half before Leon Legge levelled the scores.
"It was brilliant play from Leon
Legge," Allen said. "It was leadership from him through example.
Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s tough but they keep going and it’s
another point on the board and we are now eight points clear. We
were seven points clear.
"We are top of the league going into
March, as we have been all season and I am a very proud
manager on my way to see Mr Scally in Dubai - so how
fantastic."
The Gills conceded their first goal on
the road since beating Rotherham three months ago.
And before jetting off to the United
Arab Emirates, Allen added: "It was going to happen at some point
but the team are so committed and they work so hard together. Even
when we don’t play well we are always going to be hard to beat.
"It was always going to be difficult
(at Aldershot) but we keep adding to our total by picking up
points. It’s another week gone, another game gone and we have
extended our lead over fourth place, which is the name of the
game."
