Kent wicket-keeper batsman Sam Billings is keen to make his LV= County Championship debut before the end of a frustrating summer for him
Sam Billings is desperate to make his championship debut for Kent before the end of the current campaign.
The 22-year-old wicket-keeper/batsman admitted this summer has been one of frustration for him but claims after
back-to-back centuries to finish the 2nd XI season, he’s itching to make his first appearance for the club in LV= County Championship, Division 2.
Billings was top scorer in both Friends Life t20 and Yorkshire Bank 40 cricket last summer, with 218 and 315 runs respectively.
However, he made just 269 in 15 games in both competitions combined this season.
He admitted: “It’s been an odd season individually, in direct contrast to last season, which went so well. It has been so up and down but then all cricketers have seasons like that. It has been hugely frustrating.”
Billings added: “Towards the back end of the t20 I started to find my touch and got some starts but it was frustrating not to kick-on. The same goes for scoring 60-odd in my last YB40 game, it was frustrating not to get another opportunity after that.”
One of the biggest frustrations for Billings came when he began the t20 campaign as the Spitfires wicketkeeper, only to be replaced behind the stumps by club vice-captain Geraint Jones midway through the campaign as skipper James Tredwell was called-up by England.
The repeat situation with Jones standing-in for Tredwell again in this week’s game against Essex has threatened to deny Billings the chance to play four-day cricket but he remains hopeful of action in one of the remaining games at Northants on Tuesday or the following week’s finale against Lancashire at Canterbury.
Billings is under contract for 2014 and he added: “There have been talks about a contract beyond that but we’re just seeing how things pan out.”
Billings is set to spend four months in Sydney this winter having spent much of last winter at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Brisbane.
