The paper was the dream of ambitious entrepreneur Frederick
Austin, who at the age of 21 opened a stationers and
photographic shop in Court Street. This was 1863 and
seven years later the firm had expanded to 4 West Street
from where the News was launched eight years later on
February 24, 1883.
Readers and advertisers quickly took to the paper and
by 1889 the business moved on to 23 Court Street, where
it stayed for the next 73 years.
The Austin family sold the paper to London County Newspapers
in 1938 and it was acquired by Walter J Cole Ltd in
1971. In 1986 the paper was sold, along with the Sheerness
Times Guardian, to the Kent Messenger Group.
Bob Bounds is only the ninth editor of the Faversham
News.
