Charity of the Year title winners selected
KM Group’s editors have chosen a wide range of
charities for their newspapers, websites and radio stations to
support in 2010.
One editor said the task was such a tough one
because so many deserving causes are suffering in the
recession.
Organisations were invited in September to
apply for the title “Charity of the Year” in the nine areas of Kent
covered by KM Group.
Kent Messenger editor Bob Bounds will be
backing The
Friends of The Wisdom Hospice in the Medway Messenger and
Stonham, the
country’s largest provider of housing and support for vulnerable
and socially excluded people, in the Kent Messenger (circulated in
Maidstone and West Kent).
The Abbeyfield Society
was chosen by Gravesend and Dartford Messenger Series editor Denise
Eaton,; and Kentish Express editor Robert Barman has selected the
Pilgrims
Hospices.
Kentish Gazette editor Leo Whitlock chose to
support The Kent Multiple Sclerosis
Therapy Centre and said: “Choosing a local charity of the year
was really tough with so many deserving causes in the area, all of
them facing up to the challenges foisted on them by the recession.
The judges were touched by the Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy
Centre’s application and we’re looking forward to putting our full
weight behind them.”
On the East coast of Kent, editor Graham Smith
will be supporting
Macmillan Cancer Support Kent through the East Kent Mercury and
Thanet Extra editor Carol Davies will be backing Thanet
Disabled Riding Centre.
While in Swale Sheppey Sea
Cadets were the choice of editor Matt Ramsden for
the Sheerness Times Guardian and for Sittingbourne
Messenger the local branch of the
MS Society was selected.
Matt said: “Both the charities we have chosen
have excellent community links and do extremely worthwhile work.
The sea cadets are an ever-present part of Sheppey life;
representing the Island brilliantly while the MS Society provides
help, guidance and friendship to people suffering from this
terrible illness.”
All of the successful causes will receive the
full backing of the newspaper and kmfm, highlighting its work and
any special fund-raising projects it undertakes during the year.
The KM Charity Team and
kmfm also aims to stage one or more fund-raising events to support
the selected cause.
