KM Group celebrates the Dunkirk spirit
At 18.57 on May 26, 1940, Vice Admiral Bertram
Ramsay received the signal to start Operation Dynamo and Kent was
thrown into the front line of the Dunkirk evacuation. The Dunkirk
spirit was witnessed by Kent Messenger reporters, who were on the
scene as the evacuated soldiers’ stories began to unfold.
The county newspaper of Kent captured the atmosphere
of the day, reporting on the astonishing resilience of those
trapped on the beaches, those who risked their lives and those that
lost them.
A special KM Group supplement commemorates the 70th
anniversary and pays tribute to those who played their part in the
evacuation. Featuring recollections of some of the people who
remember Dunkirk as if it were yesterday, the 24-page pull-out
features stories of heroics in the face of adversity, as well as
childhood memories, that are as clear today as they were 70 years
ago.
The supplement will appear in all KM Group paid-for papers week
ending May 28 and features the front page of the Kent Messenger
from June 8, 1940 and extracts of stories from those involved in
the evacuation; not only war reports but of everyday life.
117,579 KM Group paid-for titles are circulated every week and
reach 360,810 readers.
