A CANCER survivor is taking advantage of the leap year by helping to raise money to fight the disease.

Wendy Tanton from Bexleyheath is hoping to cash in on February 29 with Cancer Research UK’s Make Today Count campaign.

The 40-year-old said: "We’ll all have an extra day in 2008, thanks to the leap year. I urge people to do something positive with those 24 extra hours and help make a real difference to someone’s life.

"However small your contribution or donation, it really can make a difference to people like me."

Mrs Tanton was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and underwent a double mastectomy.

The keen gardener is now on the road to recovery and a trek through Spain on horseback last year raised £17,000 for the charity.

Hazel Bedford, fund-raising manager for Cancer Research UK, said: "It doesn’t matter what people do on February 29, the idea is to just Make Today Count by supporting the charity’s life-saving work. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and though survival rates are improving, there is still a lot more that needs to be done.

"We rely on generous public support to continue our work and with more than a quarter of a million people diagnosed with cancer each year in the UK, it has never been more important for the people of Bexley to join together to beat the disease."

The charity hopes to raise £1million from donations on February 29. For information on how to support the charity, call 020 7009 8820.
