A bumper cheque for charity and a dramatic twist in the fortunes of teams marked south Kent’s biggest charity quiz of the year.

The excitement started early on the night when Les Barrow failed to answer his KM Cash Builder question correctly causing him to miss out on a £500 on the spot-cash prize.

A number of the county’s best quiz teams had joined dozens of south Kent wine and wisdom lovers to compete in the Ashford heat of the KM Big Quiz.

The early rounds saw the quiz experts failing to reach the top of the score table, but in the last two rounds the tables turned and Supernova polled top beating Stargating across the Quizziverse by two points. Both teams earn their place in the county final, along with 50 Shades of Pink and Great Chart Griffin.

To add to the drama the heavy rain and thunderstorm that night caused the light and power in the venue to go down temporarily.

More than £6,500 was raised on the night with Ashford Food Bank – the Kent Express Charity of the Year, Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre and KM Charity Team’s children’s road safety service all earning a slice of the charity pot.

The event was supported by a number of organisations including Specsavers, Hallett and Co, Property Online, P&O Ferries, Office Angels, McDonalds and Ashford Leisure Trust. Kent brewer Shepherd Neame donated all the beverages for the event including the Spitfire Charity Bar. The bar was manned by volunteers from Barclays Bank who matched cash raised on the night with a £2k donation.

Event questionmaster Simon Dolby said: “The 2015 event will be the 10th anniversary of the Ashford big charity quiz. I would like to speak to organisations or businesses who can help make it the biggest yet.”
