The youngsters are taking part in KM’s Buster’s Book Club, a pilot literacy scheme for schools that aims to foster a lifelong love of books.

There are ten schools taking part in the initiative, which has achieved a combined total of 568,723 minutes of at home reading. The schools are South Borough Primary School, Molehill Copse and St Francis’ Catholic Primary School in Maidstone; Northdown Primary Academy in Margate; Maypole Primary School, The Craylands Primary School and St Anselm’s Catholic Primary School in Dartford; and Riverview Junior School, Painters Ash Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Gravesham.

Teachers involved in the scheme attended a Literacy Celebration Day at Leeds Castle where the final reading figure was revealed. They also took part in a formal evaluation of Buster’s Book Club and a video featuring the teachers’ comments and feedback will soon be available to view at www.kmcharityteam.co.uk.

The pilot has now passed its evaluation and will be rolled out to schools across the county for the next academic year.

Buster’s Book Club is organised by the KM Charity Team and supported by Kent County Council, Leeds Castle, Golding Homes, Orbit South and Three R’s Teacher Recruitment agency.

Simon Dolby of the KM Charity Team said: “The pilot initiative has been a spectacular success and we are delighted to have the support of Kent County Council to offer this to other primary schools across Kent.”

Literacy leaders can find out more about Buster’s Book Club in detail at the KM Charity Team Forum on Friday, October 3. Schools involved in the pilot and senior education officers will be on hand to talk about the scheme and answer any questions.

Businesses and organisations wanting to find out about sponsoring the initiative can contact Simon Dolby on 07989 164 752 or sdolby@thekmgroup.co.uk.
