Fourteen schools taking part in the KM Walk to School initiative have been invited to the launch of KM Green Champions, a scheme that rewards children who care about the environment. The event is being held on October 21 at The Central Theatre in Chatham.

Invitations have been sent to Bligh Infant and Junior School, Delce Infant School, Featherby Infant and Nursery School, High Halstow Primary School, Maundene School, St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary, Rainham St Benedict's Catholic Primary, St Margaret's Infant School, St Mary's Catholic Primary School, St Nicholas CEVC Infant School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Walderslade Primary School and Wayfield Primary School.

Other school councils or eco committees in the area can attend provided they are registered for KM Walk to School in advance of the launch.

Medway schools interested in finding out more about Walk to School and Green Champions can send teacher representatives to the event as observers. But they must book their places in advance.

All attendees - teachers and children alike - will go into a lucky draw based on their seat number to win a family ticket to this year’s panto Aladdin at The Central Theatre.

The KM Green Champions scheme encourages pupils to become ambassadors for eco-friendly travel. They promote the benefits of walking to school through green travel surveys, poster competitions, newsletters and other activities.

Sponsors of the scheme include Medway Council, Kent County Council, Ashford Borough Council, Canterbury City Council, Maidstone Borough Council, Thanet District Council, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Mini Babybel, Countrystyle Recycling, Specsavers, Chaucer Foundation, Eurostar, Southern Water, Orbit South, Golding Homes, Jelf Insurance Brokers, Leeds Castle, Independent Music Productions and Whitefriars shopping area.

Schools wanting to sign up for KM Walk to School to attend the Green Champions launch should call Mr Simon Dolby on the hotline 07989 164 752.

Teachers registering as an observer at the event must contact Andrea Taft at ataft@thekmgroup.co.uk or call 0844 264 0291.
