The first three projects to be showcased at the KM Bright Spark Awards have been named.

The dragon’s den-style event will let students showcase their cool science projects in front of a panel of industry experts.

The event takes place at the Discovery Park, Sandwich and is supported by the science faculty at the University of Kent and the STEM team at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Schools will have their work filmed in advance with a version screened at the science showcase.

Simon Dolby from the KM Charity Team, which is staging the event, said: “The work we have assessed so far has been very impressive and I’m delighted to be able to name the first three projects to be invited to attend the event and meet our panel of experts.”

The first projects to be unveiled are from Dane Court Grammar School, Thanet and The Skinners’ School, Tunbridge Wells.

A group of sixth formers from Dane Court Grammar School have built the Sandstorm Simulation Chamber to enable companies to test how their products will cope in desert environments. The work took the students six months to complete and was requested by a Kent company.

A group of 13-year-old students at The Skinners’ School have built a solar kiln to dry wood to its optimal moisture content, enhancing its financial value. Being solar powered the aim is that the concept can be used anywhere in the world.

Lukas Ratcliffe and Ben Loxton, both 17, and Nathan Davey, 16, also from The Skinners’ School, have built the Aerial Exploration Sulphur Oxide Project – a drone that is able to fly above traffic blackspots to sample pollution levels.

Also supporting the event are Betteridge and Milson Ltd, Hectic Lifestyles and Integrated Technologies Ltd, but extra sponsors are needed for the event.
