A safety marshal has been killed in a crash during a road race for dozens of cyclists in Lamberhurst.

The 55-year-old motorcyclist was an official for the regional Road Racing League event involving more than 60 bikers.

He suffered serious injuries in a crash with a car in Furnace Lane, Hook Green, at around 10.40am yesterday.

The man was pronounded dead at the scene, near the Elephant's Head pub.

British Cycling said the tragedy involving the National Escort Group motorcyclist happened on the first day of the South East Road Race League three-day event.

The race was stopped and racing has been cancelled for the rest of the weekend.

Next of kin for the motoryclist - from Surbiton, south London - have been told, but he has not been formally identified.
