Maidstone's Mote Park set for new adventure playground as councillors meet to discuss proposal

It's been years in the making but a council's plan to create a pay-to-use adventure park in Maidstone is set to be given the go ahead.

The borough council wants to build the £790,000 Adventure Zone in seven hectares of the northwestern corner of Grade II listed Mote Park.

This would include high wires, a climbing wall, and a nine-hole adventure golf course in the area currently occupied by the skate park.

The development would also see the creation of 271 new parking spaces, new footpaths and a kiosk for taking payments and dealing with back office functions.

Though they aren't included in the submitted plans, the council also wants to create a Segway hire operation and replace the skate park at another location.

Objections have been made by four residents as well as the Kent Wildlife Trust, who object to the building of a permanent car park at the entrance and for the location of part of the adventure play area.

They also say the scheme is in conflict with the council's own 10-year development vision for Mote Park.

A report to be considered by councillors says: "It would represent sustainable development which would support the economic, social and environmental strands.

"The proposals would not harm the significance of the historic park nor adversely affect the setting of Grade II and Grade II listed Buildings and the application satisfactorily addresses arboricultural and ecology matters and would allow for appropriate protection and mitigation."

The application will be discussed at Maidstone Borough Council's planning committee meeting at the Town Hall in Jubilee Square from 6.30pm.

The public can attend and copies of the agenda are available here.
