Maidstone was plunged into traffic chaos after a bus crash which closed part of the gyratory.

It happened on the bridge system, at the junction of the High Street and Bishops Way at 1.30pm and police, paramedics and a fire crew were called.

The Park and Ride bus collided with a car, which then struck a traffic light. One woman, aged 33, was treated at the scene for a neck injury but did not need to go to hospital.

Car driver Barry Maden, 67, from Lancashire was visiting Maidstone to see his partner's grandchild when it happened.

He said the bus hit the side of his Ford Mondeo before shunting it up against the traffic light.

Mr Maden was later told by police that the initial collision had severed the bus's air-brakes which is why the bus had kept pushing him.

His partner Julie Simpson was receiving medical treatment following the crash. There were 15 people on the bus - none of which are thought to be injured.

Bishops Way was closed southbound and drivers diverted via High Street and Mill Street. The exit from the High Street onto Bishops Way is also closed.

The bus had been removed from the scene by 3.20pm and the road was reopened shortly afterwards.

Noone from Arriva or Kent County Council wished to comment.

Kent Highways have said to avoid the area if possible.

It comes a day after a ceremony to mark the official opening of the revamped gyratory system.
