Jake Brooks, of The Avenue, Aylesford, convicted of criminal damage after champagne firework damages plastic chair

An Aylesford man had an expensive night out after a sparkler in a bottle of champagne landed him in hot water.

Jake Brooks, of The Avenue, was on a night out with friends at The Source bar in Rose Yard, Maidstone, on Saturday, March 28, when he purchased the bottle of booze.

The 21-year-old took it out to the club's balcony, lit the attached firework, panicked at how fierce the flame was and threw it into the garden of the neighbouring Muggleton Inn.

The missile landed on and destroyed a £50 plastic chair and he was later arrested.

Brooks admitted criminal damage at a Maidstone Magistrates' Court hearing and was ordered to pay for a replacement chair.

The court heard how since the incident Brooks had visited the pub and observed that the plastic chairs had been replaced, a change his solicitor suggested may have something to do with the furniture's apparent flammability.

He was also handed a 12-month conditional discharge, fined £85 and will have to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
