Maidstone Borough Council planning committee approve plan for homes at Lilk Meadow in Bearsted

One of the most controversial planning applications of the last year was decided last night by Maidstone council’s planning committee.

Councillors approved a scheme, subject to a S106 agreement to be agreed, to build 50 homes at a site off Crosskeys in Bearsted, variously known as Roundwell Park, Lilk Meadow or The Bogs.

It was due to be heard last month but the decision was postponed.

There has been widespread condemnation of the proposals to build on a patch of greenfield land known to flood regularly.

The council had received 128 individual letters of objection. Opposition also came from local ward councillors

Val Springett and Mike Cumming and Bearsted Parish Council had objected “in the strongest possible terms”.

Opponents were concerned about flooding, the effect on near-by listed buildings and the pressure on schooling, roads and the rural landscape.

The scheme is contrary to Maidstone’s own Local Plan and is opposed by the council’s own conservation officer.

But planning officers said the opposition was outweighed by Maidstone’s failure to provide a five-year housing supply.

Councillors followed their recommendation that the scheme be approved.
