A nine-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was involved in a crash with a lorry in the village of Cowden near Edenbridge.

She is in a critical condition in hospital with serious head injuries after the smash yesterday afternoon.

Kent Police said the girl is believed to have been in the back of a silver Kia Sportage that was involved in a collision with a red Daf lorry.

It happened on Hartfield Road, at the Butterwell Hill junction, at about 3.25pm.

She was taken to a London hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

DS Scott Lynch, of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to this collision and also to people who may have seen these vehicles in the area prior to the collision.

"In particular we would like to speak to the driver of a light brown car, believed to be female, which was being driven along Hartfield Road, close to the Butterwell Hill junction."

A 35-year-old man, from Latvia, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been bailed, pending further inquiries, until January 29.

Anyone with information is asked to phone the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.
