Maidstone: Police, fire crews and paramedics called to Broadway Shopping Centre

Police are investigating after a noxious liquid was thrown at a pedestrian and a security guard at a Maidstone shopping centre.

Three police cars, an ambulance, a fire engine and a fire service car were called to the Broadway, off the gyratory on the bridge system, shortly after 10.30am.

The complex is home to Matalan, Lidl, Crossfit gym and a number of small specialist businesses.

Connor Duffy, who works at the gym, said: "A security guard for the Broadway Centre came into the gym and had to wash off some acid which had got on him. I don't know much more, we have been kept in the dark."

It was reported that a noxious liquid was thrown from a bottle, and struck a 27-year-old man and security guard by the top car park of the centre.

No serious injuries were reported and no one required hospital treatment. Officers are looking to locate the suspect.

The 27-year-old victim of the attack was then arrested on suspicion of possessing class A drugs.

An eyewitness said police officers were wearing plastic gloves at the scene and holding up an orange plastic sheet to shield the public's view of what was happening.

Police and paramedics had left the scene by 12.30pm.
