Firefighters called to Lower Stone Street, Maidstone

A block of flats in Maidstone was evacuated as firefighters tackled a blaze on the 10th floor.

Six fire engines were called to Miller Heights in Lower Stone Street just before 6.30pm.

The fire started in an electrical cupboard, and 20 residents had to leave the building while crews tackled the flames.

They used breathing apparatus and the building's dry rise system to feed water into the property to tackle the fire.

All residents were eventually allowed to return to their homes, but tenants in one apartment on 10th floor needed to be temporarily rehomed due to fire damage.

There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is thought to have been an electrical fault.

Firefighters had left the scene by 8pm.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews worked extremely hard to contain the fire within the electrical cupboard, minimising damage throughout the apartment."

A police spokesman added: "Kent Police was called by Kent Fire and Rescue Service at 6.44pm on Sunday 19 February 2017 to a report of a flat fire in Lower Stone Street, Maidstone.

"Officers attended to assist with road closures surrounding the incident while it was dealt with and the road was reopened at 8.10pm. No reports of injuries are believed to have been reported."
