Maidstone: Straw fire in field off Upper Street, Leeds

Firefighters spent nearly 12 hours at the scene of a large fire, after 300 tonnes of straw went up in flames.

Two crews were called to a stubble field in Upper Street in Leeds just before 11pm on Monday and worked to prevent it spreading to neighbouring fields. They also dampened the ground around the blaze.

One crew remained at the scene overnight and worked with the farmer, using farm equipment, to spread out and extinguish the remainder of the fire.

The cause is unknown.
