Maidstone: Football match at Gallagher Stadium in honour of Fred McIlveen

A charity football match will be held in honour of a crash victim who had given his time to help youngsters get into the game.

Fred McIlveen died after his motorbike was involved in a crash with a car on Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, on Friday, October 13.

The 60-year-old spent close to three weeks on the critical care unit at Kings College Hospital in London, but died on Wednesday, November 1.

The father and grandfather worked at Maidstone Hospital, as well as spending time supporting the Maidstone United Raiders, the club’s disability teams.

These two groups will take each other on in a charity match in his honour on Saturday, December 9 at the Gallagher Stadium. Kick-off is at 1pm.

Clive Hedges, a former colleague who is organising the match, said: “He was a good man, happy-go-lucky, and he always had a smile on his face in and out of work.

"Everyone who knew him wants to show their support for his family during this difficult time, so we wanted to do something to raise money.”

There will be a raffle at the event, with prizes including two signed Maidstone United shirts, which have been donated by the club.

Floral tributes were left at the scene of the crash.

Entry is free, but there will be a collection bucket at each entrance, and visitors are asked to donate what they can.

Mr Hedges has also launched a JustGiving page to help pay for some of the funeral costs the family may face.

He said: “The page is to give them some money to help with whatever they might come across in the next few months. “People are being really supportive and showing how much Fred meant to them.”
