Football match in memory of Maidstone student Charlie Girling who died on scout trip in Finland

Teachers of a 12-year-old boy who tragically died on a Scout trip will be taking on ex-professionals in a charity football match in his name today.

Maplesden Noakes student Charlie Girling had been in Finland for an international convention, where he passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 24.

An investigation into the cause of his death is ongoing.

Headteacher at the Buckland Road school, Richard Owen, said: “A lot of our students knew Charlie and have been very affected by his death, and we want to help where we can after such a tragedy.

“Our school is very much a community and Charlie’s family are still a part of that community.”

Money raised will go towards a memorial fund set up in the youngster’s name, which will benefit his 1st Aylesford Scout Group.

The match will take place from 12.30pm at the Gallagher Stadium in James Whatman Way today.

Charlie, from Ash Close in Aylesford, was a keen footballer who supported Maidstone United.

The school is also planning to dedicate a new relaxation area to the former student’s memory.
