South East Water confirmed it was called to the site. Distribution Manager Tony Hillocks said: "Our technician has investigated and found a six-inch diameter main is leaking.

"Broomfield Road has been closed while the damage is assessed and repairs are carried out.

"A diversion route has been put in place. We are at the early stages at the moment and cannot say at this time how long the road will be shut."

Work is underway to repair the burst and get the water system back to normal.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We were called at 8.02am to a report of a hole opening up in a road in Broomfield Road, Maidstone, and water was escaping from it.

"Officers are in attendance and have closed the road to ensure public safety."

KCC Highways and South East Water is also attending.

The road remains closed in both directions but police have left the scene.
