Extra police have been drafted in to the flood-hit village of Yalding near Maidstone amid fears of looting.

Although there has not been any incidents of theft, officers were brought in to reassure residents that their properties were safe, as several are still in temporary accommodation.

An increased police presence has been brought in overnight and PCSOs are patrolling during the day, as the clean-up operation begins after the village was submerged by flood waters at Christmas.

Chief Supt Steve Corbishley, West Division Commander, said: "It is absolutely despicable that people might target local residents who have gone through such a traumatic experience."

The local concerns were raised after suspicious vehicles were seen in the area, although both were found to be legitimate.
