Traffic was stopped on the motorway while emergency services were called to the scene.

The motorway has since reopened but one lane was shut while firefighters dealt with a fire to vegetation at the side of the road.

Two fire engines were called and police confirmed no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is said to be accidental, according to the fire service.

There is no hard shoulder on the section of "smart motorway", which was completed in May this year.

MP Tracey Crouch had previously expressed her dismay that "potentially lifesaving" equipment may not be operational on the stretch of motorway for three years.
