More traffic chaos in Maidstone and on M20

Commuters in Maidstone are facing even more traffic problems than usual this morning thanks to a crash, roadworks and broken traffic lights.

There is slow moving traffic on the London-bound M20 between junctions 5 for Aylesford and 4 for Leybourne due to an earlier accident.

The vehicle involved has been moved to the hard shoulder but Kent Highways is warning drivers to still expect delays.

Traffic lights on the A20 Ashford Road, Maidstone, are all out close to Turkey Mill and Kent Highways is advising drivers to approach the area with caution.

A spokesman confirmed a Kent County Council engineer was en route.

This morning's problems will add to delays caused by ongoing roadworks in the town.

Since the beginning of April, roadworks have been causing chaos on London Road, at the junction with Beaver Road, where work is continuing on a new housing estate.

The temporary traffic lights are set to stay until the end of May.

On the other side of town, South Park Road is closed to Shepway-bound traffic to allow SGN to replace on old gas main.

The combination of the two sets of roadworks is causing huge delays throughout the town, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours.

And just days after these works are due to finish there will be more roadworks as a year-long upgrade of Maidstone's gyratory system starts in June.
