Maidstone: Rafel Kafel of Milton Street jailed for raping woman

A brute who viciously raped a woman “in the most appalling and demeaning way” has been jailed for 11 years.

Rafel Kafel terrorised his victim so badly that she eventually jumped out of a window to escape, breaking her leg.

A judge told the 40-year-old, originally from Poland: “Over a period of hours you subjected her to violent sexual attacks which were rapes of a vile kind, even in the context of rape being serious offending.”

Kafel, of Milton Street, Maidstone, he said, had no doubt come to the UK full of expectations of a constructive and worthwhile life, but it changed partly because of his abuse of alcohol and difficulties with his business.

Judge Jeremy Carey said Kafel lured the victim into his house in May and “set about her in the most appalling and demeaning way”.

“You frightened her and terrorised her,” he continued. “You locked her in a cupboard. You punched her and beat her. There was very substantial bruising.

“You took advantage of your dominant position and beat her up in the most terrifying manner. This behaviour was of an extreme kind.

“It ended only when you casually, having raped her, looked at your computer. She took the opportunity to jump out of the window down to the ground, breaking her leg - as if the injuries she sustained at your hand were not enough.

“This poor woman is truly a victim. Her injuries, both psychological and physical, continue.”

Kafel, who had no previous convictions, admitted three rape charges.

The judge said mitigation was limited and amounted to good character and a degree of remorse.

“There is at least some insight into now in your sober state as to how truly appalling your behaviour was,” he added.

Kafel’s name will appear on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Before his arrest there was a stand-off with police. He was eventually detained in Upper Stone Street in the early hours of May 17.

Part of the town centre was cordoned off during the six-hour incident. He later barricaded himself in his cell at magistrates’ court.
