Kent athlete Martin Brockman won a surprise bronze medal in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Friday.

The Maidstone athlete held off a late challenge from compatriot Ben Hazell in the 1,500m to cross the line in first place and take third overall.

Brockman finished on 7,712 points behind gold medallist Jamie Adjetey-Nelson (Canada) and silver medallist Brent Newdick (New Zealand).

The Medway & Maidstone AC member said: “Right at the last minute I scraped into the Commonwealth Games and to come away with a medal is just crazy.

“I never thought I would get there. I think it was just the big occasion and it turned out I am a big competition performer. "
