More help for cancer sufferers

Cancer sufferers will be able to use a new centre from today to get free advice and support.

An information centre is being officially opens in Maidstone Hospital’s Oncology Centre this afternoon, by Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity’s president, Lady Camilla Halifax, will cut the ribbon.

It will be open to anyone with concerns about cancer and provides information and support in a relaxed and informal environment.

Advice is free and no appointment is necessary.

Macmillan information manager Eniko Benfield, said: "Often patients tell me they feel guilty about asking their nurse or doctor about the practical and emotional aspects of cancer because it is not a medical concern.

"We are here to discuss everything from getting the right holiday insurance and paying increased fuel bills through to helping people cope with the psychological or social issues.

"We are getting more and more patients in every day to deal with this side of things and giving the right information at the right time enables patients to prepare in the best possible way for what is to come."

The centre can also point people in the right direction to counselling, relaxation and art therapy sessions.

It was developed as a partnership between Macmillan and the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

It is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The centre is looking for volunteers. Anyone who could spare some time should contact Mr Benfield on 01622 227064.
