M20 to close for weekend for bridge demolition

Four miles of the M20 will be closed next weekend as Highways England demolishes a bridge in Aylesford.

Both carriageways will be closed between junction four and junction six from Friday, July 27 until the early hours of Monday, July 30.

The closure, which is in place for the demolition of Teapot Lane footbridge, is set to affect anyone travelling through Leybourne, Aylesford and Maidstone.

The closure will start at 10pm on the Friday, with the road expected to reopen at 5am the following Monday.

Teapot Lane footbridge will be closed on Thursday evening for preparation works, as Highways England prepares to heighten and replace the deck of the bridge.

A spokesman from Highways England said: "We aim to re-open the footbridge on the morning of Monday September 3.

"However, if the construction programme is extended, for example due to adverse weather conditions or additional safety checks, then the bridge might not re-open until Monday September 10.

"We're aware this will particularly impact people who use the local schools. We've liaised with representatives from local schools, including Aylesford Primary and Pre-School and Aylesford Sports College, and other local stakeholders around the timing of the work to the bridge deck in relation to closures to minimise disruption."

Motorists will be diverted via the A228, M2 and the A229.
