Maidstone paedophile who sexually abused two children in 1970s and 80s jailed for 20 years

A paedophile who sexually abused two children more than 30 years ago has been jailed for 20 years.

Charles Stevens, who lived in Maidstone before moving to Hawkers Cove, Padstow, was arrested in March last year after a woman approached Kent Police.

A second woman came forward later last year with further allegations against Stevens and he was charged with non-recent sex offences against two children.

Stevens, 72, denied all the charges - relating to incidents between 1975 and 1986 - but was found guilty by the jury after an eight-day trial.

In addition, he was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Investigating officer detective constable Samuel Trevena said: "Stevens repeatedly abused two vulnerable young children who have been traumatised for many years.

"I would particularly like to commend the victims for their bravery in coming forwards to report their ordeal and assisting the investigation.

"I hope the conclusion of this case and the sentence passed may provide some closure for them.

"I would encourage anyone who is a victim of sexual abuse, no matter when it happened, to get in touch with Kent Police.

"You will have our full support and we will always investigate crimes sensitively and professionally."

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “Stevens’ actions robbed his young victims of their innocence and the heavy burden of the abuse they endured will have caused them immense suffering over the years. But thanks to their bravery in speaking out justice has prevailed.

“Victims of child sexual abuse don’t need to suffer in silence. The NSPCC’s helplines are there to help and support young people, who can call Childline on 0800 1111, and adults who may have concerns about a child, who can call our helpline on 0808 800 5000.”
