Maidstone: Pensioner Mick Brooks dies after accident trying to start car in Bower Street

A pensioner left fighting for his life in hospital after being run over by his own car, has died.

The victim, named locally as Mick Brooks, became trapped as he tried to bump-start his red Fiat Doblo on a dirt track near his Maidstone home on Sunday afternoon.

The vehicle picked up speed, wedging him between the open door and a stationary Ford Fiesta.

Neighbours and gardeners from a nearby allotment rushed to Mr Brooks’ aid and tried desperately to help him after the alarm was reportedly raised by a child.

Mr Brooks suffered serious injuries to his chest, lower arm and stomach.

He was airlifted to St George’s Hospital in London, where it is understood he was put on life support, in a critical condition, and passed away days later.

A report is being compiled for the coroner.

Neighbours described Mr Brooks as a “really friendly man” who had lived in the street for decades and was very well known in the neighbourhood.

They said he would do anything for anybody, but had tragically not asked for help himself on the day of the accident.

Two fire crews were called to assist paramedics and helped with first aid. Police also attended.

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened in a track off Bower Street and Cornwallis Road at 2.20pm, to come forward.
