Annual Custard Pie championships held in Coxheath near Maidstone

They came, they saw and flung at one of the world's biggest food fights today.

The 50th anniversary of the World Custard Pie Championships was held in Coxheath today from noon.

It was dreamed up as a way of raising funds for the village hall and now sees some entrants having to be turned away, such is its popularity.

It started in the 60s with the help of local children’s entertainer Mr Pastry and has attracted TV crews and teams from around the world.

This year the event was also visited by actress Dame Penelope Keith as part of her new Channel 4 show Village of the Year.

The Coxheath Til I Pie team emerged victorious after several heats which saw close to 2,000 pies being thrown.

A scoring system sees competitors awarded a range of points depending on where their pie hits an opposing team member.

The 'custard' is a mix of flour and water.
