Maidstone: Police and armed forces called to bomb scare in Tovil

Police and army explosives experts were called to the scene of a bomb scare near Maidstone.

Officers were alerted at 3.25pm after a member of the public found a suspected wartime device in Burial Ground Lane, Tovil.

The Ministry of Defence's explosives team was called to examine the device.

It has since been taken away from the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 3.25pm to a report of a suspected wartime munition found in Burial Ground Lane, Tovil.

"Officers are at the scene and have called the Ministry of Defence's EOD team to assess the item.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and safely removed the device."

Crews have since left the scene.

It is understood nearby businesses were evacuated after the discovery.

Burial Ground Lane is where Tovil tip is based.
