Car on fire after police pursuit in Maidstone

A police chase ended with two vehicles damaged and a third car on fire.

The incident which began in Tovil ended at Honey Lane, Otham, around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

The suspect vehicle avoided an attempt to stop it with a Stinger in Sutton Road and was pursued down Gore Court Road.

The fire brigade and an ambulance attended the scene.

Police said at 4.16pm, a vehicle linked to a reported burglary in Tunbridge Wells came to their attention in Tovil.

The car did not stop and was pursued by officers to the area of Honey Lane, Otham, where police say the driver attempted to damage a number of police cars before being involved in a collision. Two police cars were damaged in the incident and the subject vehicle caught fire.

Officers arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of burglary and driving while disqualified, and a 23-year-old man on suspicion of burglary. Both men are from the Maidstone area and remain in custody.

Passengers on board a Nu-Venture number 13 bus travelling from Maidstone to Hollingbourne were caught up at the scene.

After a long delay, the driver had to reverse half a mile down the road to turn around.

One of those arrested suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed from 4.30pm until 6.20pm.
