Postal voters waiting at Maidstone Borough Council offices despite being told new ballot papers would be ready

Constituents in Maidstone who didn't receive ballot papers in order to cast votes in tomorrow's election are still in the dark as to how long it will take for new forms to be issued.

Having turned up at the borough council's offices in King Street under the impression they would be issued with new papers on-the-spot postal voters are being told to go home and wait for a phone call.

Stephen King, who is unable to attend a polling station tomorrow as he is away on business, was one of those affected.

The 59-year-old said he had to wait two hours to receive his slip after turning up at the office despite being given the impression he would be handed it immediately.

Another voter left in the dark said: "I reported the fact I hadn't received my slip last week and have called again since, I came in today and was under the impression the new ballot paper would be ready and waiting. I showed my idea and filled out a form and then was told it would take a while to make up the new slip.

"Not only have I had to take time off work to collect the ballot paper but I'm also concerned about where the original has gone."

The authority has told people they can collect the new papers up until 5pm tomorrow and despite the waiting times a spokesman today confirmed as long as voters turn up before that time they will be issues with replacements.
