Friends of a boy who died after having an asthma attack have been offered counselling after suffering two tragedies in less than three months.

Lee Green, 12, died yesterday, two days after suffering a serious asthma attack at Albion Place Medical Practice in Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone.

Until March last year he was a pupil at The Maplesden Noakes School in Buckland Road.

He was in the same year group as Charlie Girling, who collapsed and died at a Scout jamboree in Finland in July.

Today head teacher Richard Owen said staff were doing all they could to support pupils through this difficult time.

Speaking to the Kent Messenger he said: "We are all very shocked at the school and our hearts go out to the family.

"We are putting measures in place to support our children and make sure their well-being and needs are catered for.

"At this stage our condolences go to Lee's family and we will make sure we come together as a school community."

Reacting to the fact pupils were having to deal with a second tragedy in a few months, Mr Owen said: "We are very sensitive to this and will make sure we do all the right things for the Year 8 group that's been affected by these similar situations."

The head also sent a letter to parents and guardians, telling them the tragic news and promising they would look after their children.

The letter said: "I am really sorry to have to inform you that we have received yet more tragic news. Lee Green, a student who left us last year in Year 7, has died.

"This is particularly difficult for Year 8 as this is the second tragic death they have had to deal with in recent months. Both staff and students are shocked. I have spoken to Year 8 and we are supporting students who have been severely affected.

"We believe the death may have been linked to an asthma attack so we have reassured students who are asthmatic that there is nothing to worry about. We have contacted a specialist asthma nurse to come in and talk to the students.

"We have contacted the KCC counselling team who I hope will respond by coming in to school and supporting those who require someone to talk to.

"I’m sure parents will want to support their children this evening. Please be aware that you may well have upset children when they arrive home."

Lee, who was home-schooled after leaving Maplesden Noakes, was rushed to Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Pembury, after he collapsed on Wednesday.

He was transferred to the Evelina Children's Hospital in London, where he died last night.

His family today described him as a sweet boy with a heart of gold.

Charlie was a member of the 1st Aylesford Scout Group.

An investigation is taking place to determine whether an inquest into Charlie's death is necessary.
