Remembering greatest sacrifices

Those who have lost their lives in conflicts across the globe will be remembered this Sunday.

The Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Denise Joy, will join military and civic dignitaries, Maidstone councillors and the public for the town’s annual parade.

More than 700 people will take part in the march, which will start in Week Street at 10.30am, led by the Band of the Salvation Army.

Groups taking part will include 36 Engineer Regiment, the Maidstone branches of the Royal British Legion and British Army Association, St John Ambulance, South Borough Primary School and Army and Air Force Cadets.

The parade will travel along the High Street, past the Town Hall, across the bridge gyratory system to the cenotaph on The Broadway.

A Remembrance service will be led by The Rev Canon Christopher Morgan-Jones, Maj Grayson Williams of the Salvation Army, and Padre Murray McBride of 36 Engineer Regiment before a two-minute silence at 11am and the laying of wreaths.

In West Malling, the Mayor and Mayoress of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Chris Smith and his wife Sonia, will take the salute as a parade passes the pump in West Malling High Street at 2.15pm.

The parade will continue to St Mary’s Church, where a Remembrance service will begin at 2.30pm. After the service there will be a short wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial outside the church.

The Lord Lieutenant of Kent will be represented by Deputy Lieutenant, Group Captain (Retd) Patrick Tootal.

Cllr Smith said: “To play a part in the borough’s acts of remembrance is a great honour. We shall be remembering not only those who gave their lives in the two World Wars, but also those who have been lost in more recent conflicts.

“I hope everyone will join me in honouring these gallant men and women, and make sure their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

In Staplehurst, the parade will assemble at the village centre at 10am and march off at 10.15am to All Saints Church for a 10.45am service.

This will be followed, weather permitting, by a march back to the village centre by the Royal British Legion and Scout, Guide and Brownie colour parties.

A service will be held at 2.45pm in the Royal British Legion village in Aylesford, when ex-servicemen and women remember their fallen comrades.

KM Group president Edwin Boorman, as president of the branch, will lay a wreath.
