A town centre road was closed today after a pensioner was taken ill.

Knightrider Street, in Maidstone, was blocked by police just after noon, while a 78-year-old man was treated at the scene.

The patient was seen lying on the pavement outside Nick's Tackle Shop.

A police officer was first at the scene and began CPR when the man went into cardiac arrest.

A crew from South East Coast Ambulance arrived and took over from the officer, and managed to resuscitate the pensioner before taking him to Maidstone Hospital.
