Maidstone railway stations remain closed as Southeastern cope with snow and ice

Commuters hoping to use the train will be disappointed again today as disruption continues.

Snow and ice has meant that travellers using Maidstone West will not be able to get a train as the Medway Valley line, connecting Paddock Wood and Strood and onward to London stations, is closed.

However, Southeastern Railway are running a replacement bus service for the line but it is dependent on road conditions.

Maidstone West was just one of 50 stations closed across the county.

Trains running on the Sheerness line, connecting the Isle of Sheppey to the mainland, have also been replaced with a bus service.

At Maidstone East, customers will have to contend with major disruption as the line is blocked towards Ashford International by a snow drift at Lenham. The railway operator is diverting trains on this route via Tonbridge.

Southeastern began the day issuing advice to customers who are planning to travel today and tomorrow but later urgent them not to travel at all.

A Southeastern spokesman said: “We are currently experiencing severe difficulties with the train service across our entire network as a result of freezing rain and ice forming on conductor rails, which our trains use to pick up power.

“We are currently advising passengers not to travel. This applies to all Southeastern routes: Metro, Mainline and High Speed.

“We are working to bring services back into operation as soon as possible. We will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
