That figure accounts for nearly 20% of the 143, 883 penalties issued to drivers in south east.

Maidstone was the worst performing postcode area for speeding, with 2,841 fixed penalty notices issued for the offence and a further 23 handed out for dangerous driving.

Drivers in Rochester also fared poorly, with 2,053 fixed penalty notices given for speeding and 23 for dangerous driving.

To coincide with this Brake has launched its Look out for Each Other campaign, which encourages drivers to show more respect to road users.

“When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific." -Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive for Brake

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, said: “Ultimately, we’re all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes.

“When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific.

“There are wider consequences if we don’t look out for each other on roads – people afraid to walk and cycle or let their kids walk and cycle, and unable to get out and enjoy their community and live active lifestyles.

“That’s why we’re asking all road users to look out for and protect each other. That means drivers sticking to 20 or below in towns and villages, looking carefully at junctions, and being considerate.”
